 Alex is responsible for design, delivery and management of the Business pathway on Leeds Conservatoire’s BA (Hons) Music, this also includes the Professional Studies strand accounting for a quarter of the degree studied by all undergraduate students. His teaching caseload includes Music Journalism, Enterprise, Popular Music Theory and Musicianship for Production. He is interested in the gamification of learning to explore the boundaries between vocational simulation and professional practice.
 
Alex completed his PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University. His thesis, titled ‘Thinking Frames in Popular Music Education’, applies psychoanalytic theory to the practices of popular musicians to consider how language is used in music education and how identity is formed by musicians. He has eighteen years experience of teaching in colleges, schools, universities and community centres and is a passionate educationalist. Alex is a director of ‘Beat Bazaar’ a creative community organisation that focuses on exchanging music, roots and culture.

Alex continues to work as a professional electric bass player on original projects, session work, function bands and jam sessions. He particularly enjoys playing Reggae, Hiphop, Disco and Jazz. Current activities include: ‘Seven Gates’ an audio/visual collaboration fusing Ragas, Arabic melodies and Chorales with free improvisation; ‘Live Cipher’ a jam session for MCs; and regular performances with the ‘Manchester Ska Foundation’ a 2 Tone tribute band.
