Professor Andrew West has been a professional musician since 1990, when he joined Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) and Roger Cook (Blue Mink) to form the eclectic trio Cornwell, Cook and West.

In the early nineties the trio toured the UK and Europe, playing at venues including London Palladium, The Bloomsbury Theatre and Ronnie Scotts. Over 350 of Andy’s songs have been published by Warner Chappell Music, Sony ATV, Paul McCartney’s MPL Communications and others, with some featuring in the Grammy winning shows ‘Heroes’, ‘Lost’ and ‘True Blood’, and others recorded by artists as diverse as rock n’ roll pioneer Joe Brown and progressive rock legends Stackridge. To date, his songs have featured in film and on TV in over 40 countries.

Whilst resident in Nashville between 1997 and 2003, Andy performed and recorded his songs with some of the world’s finest pop and rock musicians including Ian Wallace (Bob Dylan), Garry Tallent (Bruce Springsteen), Kenny Vaughan (Lucinda Williams), Willie Weeks (David Bowie) and Chad Cromwell (Neil Young). He also released an album ‘Sundays and Birthdays’ on the US based Infinity Cat label and produced recording sessions at Nashville’s EMI, American and House of David studios including Julie Lee’s ‘Stillhouse Road’ featuring Grammy winning vocalists Alison Krauss and Vince Gill.

Prior to joining Leeds Conservatoire in 2011, Andy designed and course directed the World’s first Masters degree in Songwriting at Bath Spa University. Since then, he has taught songwriting and production students at conservatoires in Rome, Copenhagen, Mannheim, Amsterdam, Aarhus, Kristiansand, Espjerg, Rotterdam and Oslo. Having completed an MA and PhD in the Teaching and Learning of Songwriting in Higher Education, Andy wrote a book ‘The Art of Songwriting’, published by Bloomsbury in 2016. His book on the words and music of Paul Weller is due for publication by Routledge in 2022. Andy was recently appointed as a member of the Association of European Conservatoires (AEC) Lifelong Learning Working Group as part of the ‘Empowering Artists as Makers in Society’ project from 2022-25.
