James was born in Dudley, England in 1991. He has studied in Birmingham, Paris and Berlin, and is now based between Berlin and the UK, working around Europe as a musician, educator and composer, mainly within the fields of jazz and improvised music.




In 2017, his project USINE received an award from the Berlin Senate Department of Culture and Europe, and in 2018 he received the Elsa Neumann Stipendium from the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and HfM Hanns Eisler, supporting the ambitious choral and improvising ensemble project Voices of Berlin. He is composer in residence for Make The Paint Dance, workshop leader for Jazzlines THSH Birmingham and in 2018 was selected for the Adopt A Composer scheme with Making Music, to receive a premiere on BBC Radio 3 in 2019. In Berlin, James co-curates a monthly residency 'Practically Married' with Scottish pianist and Leeds Conservatoire Alumnus Declan Forde at Berlin's Donau115, voted one of Europe's best jazz clubs by The Guardian.

James is also active in a variety of pan-European projects across a range of genres with musicians such as Mark Pringle, Greg Cohen, Elias Stemeseder, Birgitta Flick, Tobias Delius, Max Andrzejewski and Rachel Sermanni, and has also performed with the Konzerthaus Publikums Orchester and the Landesjugendensemble Neue Musik Berlin.
