Courses taught: BA Music (Folk, Roots & Blues)

Rachael is a folk singer and multi-instrumentalist. Having grown up in the tradition, she has been performing since she was 3 years old. Hailing from a traditional music background (Lăutari), her heritage has formed the basis of her creative output and academic research. After studying contemporary classical music at Dartington College of Arts, Rachael went on to reinterpreting traditional pieces for unaccompanied voice.

She formed The Heathen Kings, a touring band currently working on their fourth release (Good At The Bad Things 2012, Not In Service 2013, From Bedlam to Babylon 2017) and tenth anniversary tour. Her trio Laiken, works in the margins of traditional storytelling mixed with jazz and electronica. Rachael has toured as part of EFDSS’ Folk Rising initiative, developed and performed soundtracks for theatre productions (Elise Rhode-Hansen - Whispers 2013) and is a BBC presenter for Folk, Roots & Blues programmes.
