Workshop Session Descriptions

Critical Listening

This session will focus on developing active listening rather than passive hearing. We will examine different interpretations of scored works, exploring how what is seen on the page translates into sound, and how critical listening can deepen our understanding of both composers' and performers' intentions.

Classical Improvisation

This session will start to explore the ways in which improvisation within Classical music has been an essential element for both performance and composition. We will explore realisation of elements of musical language that may or may not be visible on the score.

Audition Preparation

Best practice for the preparation of audition material, from selection of repertoire, research that informs interpretation, control of nerves, and 'thinking beyond the notes.'

Performance in Context

Vocal students will explore technical and interpretative aspects of repertoire, language and presentation that successfully communicate the composers' intentions.

Instrumental students will be given advice to improve approaches to performance that could include technical, rhythmical and interpretative aspects, as well as the challenges faced by performers in the communication of musical works.

Music in Context

This session will explore how rethinking the stories and meanings behind musical works can offer new perspectives and refresh our approach to interpretation.

Film Rewind

Drop in and observe live recording sessions from the Film Rewind project. In small mixed-pathway groups, students can see how recording sessions run in real time and get a feel for the kind of creative, extracurricular projects taking place across the Conservatoire.
