A Day in the Life of a Film Music Student

Ever wondered what a typical day as a Film Music student looks like?

Join us and get a taste of conservatoire life by learning from our current lecturers.

A Day in the Life of a Film Music Degree student introduces students to the concepts, theories and practices of the film music industry, and specifically offering students an experience of what a typical day is like on the Film Music degree.  

To get the most out of this course, students should have an understanding / awareness of Music technology, and need to be able to read music to an intermediate level.

Film Rewind: Recording Session Viewing

At some point throughout the day, you will drop in and observe live recording sessions from the Film Rewind project. In small mixed-pathway groups, students can see how recording sessions run in real time and get a feel for the kind of creative, extracurricular projects taking place across the Conservatoire.

Workshop Session Descrptions

Composition and Emotion 

Students will be introduced to the various harmonic and compositional devices used in music for the moving image. The session will look at composing, arranging and placement, and will also reference film music industry practices. We will also discuss the use of emotion in music for film, television and games.

The Use of Technology in Music for Film, TV and Games

In this session, students will learn more about the use of technology in music for the moving image by discussing how computers and the use of sample technology are employed in the production of 'sync music' and music to picture. 

Showcasing Work

The final session gives students chance to play any work-in-progress pieces to tutors and receive feedback on their work. This session will also offer more insight into the Video Games aspect of the new degree and gives students a chance to learn more about the BA Undergraduate course in general.

For Leeds Conservatoire Offer Holders, admission to the Day in the Life workshops is free and part of your Offer Holder Status (booking is still required). 

For all other students, we may be able to help financially if:

  • You receive free school meals or have a household taxable income of less than £25,000
  • You are from a Global Majority background
