Your Time at Leeds Conservatoire
What is the most surprising or amazing thing you have learned so far?
Learning just how diverse and unique everyone's approach to performing can be was an amazing sight to behold. Everyday I am in awe at how each student brings a vastly different perspective to the world of drama, and I am so grateful to always learn something new each lesson.
What has surprised you most about studying at Leeds Conservatoire?
I was definitely surprised by the variety of classes and modules offered by the Conservatoire. Before applying to study here, I knew the training was rigorous and I intentionally pursued that intensity in order to challenge myself. However, I am always delightfully surprised by the breadth of work covered and the different genres of storytelling I am being exposed to.
Do you have any advice for students who are considering moving to the UK to study?
My advice is to remain rooted in what makes you you and to keep in contact with your family back home. Moving to a new country can be difficult and it is easy to lose a sense of identity. However, if you regularly engage with loved ones, you can very easily make the UK your second home.
Your Career
What are your career goals/ where do you see yourself in 10 years?
As hopeful as this may sound, I hope to become a theatre practitioner in the future. My ultimate goal is to find my own, "Bernadette Koh - style" form of storytelling that I could teach others someday. And I hope to remind others that Southeast Asian stories and expression should be on the West End and in the National Theatre.
What have your career highlights been so far?
So far, I've had the pleasure of working with a variety of creatives in Singapore, Australia and the UK. It is always a joy to create different genres of theatre and I love broadening my horizons with each project. Being able to stage my own play has also been a highlight and I look forward to pursuing playwriting as well.
Studying in Leeds
What has helped you feel at home in Leeds?
Cooking nostalgic dishes (at least trying to) helps me to feel more at home. It's a joy to share such dishes with my UK friends, it feels like I'm keeping my cultural traditions alive, encouraging a sense of community through food. Calls with loved ones around the world also helps me feel as though my family is right beside me.
Share your recommendations for places to visit in Leeds:
The various museums the city has to offer is a major highlight, and I would 100% recommend visiting the Royal Armouries. Places like Kirkgate Market and the Corn Exchange are lovely for calm, carefree shopping. I would also recommend going to Roundhay Park or Meanwood Park in the Spring. And of course, Kirkstall Abbey is a must!
