Hi India - What made you choose Leeds Conservatoire?

When I was sixteen, I had a studio session with a recent graduate of Leeds Conservatoire. I was so inspired by the way he described the Jazz course and conservatoire's creative atmosphere that I was keen to experience it for myself. After one conversation, I was sold!

Has anything been totally different to what you expected when you started at Leeds Conservatoire?

Before I started, I was worried the conservatoire would be a really competitive environment. However, I was pleased to find that students here are incredibly supportive. There is a real community spirit which is very inspiring. Everyone loves to collaborate on projects - If you're ever stuck without a band member or want to learn something new, there's always someone around to lend a helping hand.

What is the most mind blowing thing you've learned so far at Leeds Conservatoire?

The amazing facilities that available for students to use and borrow!

Is there anything that has really made you push yourself as a musician or performer?

Absolutely! Last year, I started getting into rap, which has been so fun and opened lots of doors. I knew that if I wanted to be taken seriously as a rap artist, I would need to be focused and work hard. Recently, I performed in my first solo gig, which allowed me to learn how to use the stage effectively and engage the audience in a live setting as a solo performer.

What was the best piece of advice you've had since starting at Leeds Conservatoire?

Listen, learn and take notes what other people are doing, as it can really develop your own music, but don't compare yourself.

What is your best memory from Leeds Conservatoire?

I love the B Side Jazz nights at the conservatoire!

B-Side is our monthly jazz night at Leeds Conservatoire, featuring staff, students and alumni from our Jazz programmes.

What is the best thing about living and studying in Leeds?

The people, the music and the skateboarding.

What advice would you give to a prospective student thinking of applying to your course?

Don't worry if you don't feel you're ready or skilled enough to be at the conservatoire. It's easy to panic when you first start studying music! The tutors here are excellent and really supportive, and you can take things at your own pace. I was worried that I wasn't good enough when I first came to Leeds, but my grades were strong by the end of the first year, and my confidence and improvement as a musician had improved hugely!

How would you describe your experience at Leeds Conservatoire so far in three words?

Inspiring, lively and sweet.

Do you have news you'd like to share?

I have recently released my new track 'Better Run' on Spotify!

Can you tell us a little bit about your music?

I'm a singer/rapper influenced most by hip-hop, soul and jazz. My music lives somewhere between Lauryn Hill, Tyler the Creator and Kanye West.

How has studying at Leeds Conservatoire influenced your work?

I wouldn't be where I am now if I hadn't studied here. Studying on the Jazz course and meeting my band mates has been an incredible experience.
