CJO: Gustavo and the Brasukas!
Join us for one night only in which the Leeds Conservatoire Contemporary Jazz Orchestra performs an evening of traditional Brazilian music, written for big band. Expect a range of dynamic and exciting works, all arranged and directed by Gustavo Andrade.
Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade came to Leeds from São Paulo in 2019 to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. Just as he began gigging with jazz, soul and hip-hop bands in 2020, the pandemic shut down society and live music came to a halt. He returned in summer 2021, focusing on Brazilian music, and since then, he's lit up the Brazilian music scene in the north of England—first with his bossa jazz band, Quinteto Gustavo Andrade, and more recently with his 10-piece big band, Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas. In addition to leading his own projects, Gustavo also works as a session musician, performing as both a saxophonist and percussionist across a wide range of styles—from Afro-Latin music with Orchestra Mambo International to experimental electronic music with Jinjé and The Brief Utopia
