Social Insights Symposium: Global Majority Music, Memory & Leeds Conservatoire

As part of Leeds Conservatoire’s 60th anniversary celebrations, this Social Insights Symposium brings together artists, practitioners, educators and cultural leaders to explore the contribution of Indian, South Asian, Black and Afro-Caribbean communities to the musical and cultural life of Leeds.

Grounded in newly rediscovered archival material alongside lived experience and community knowledge, the event creates space for open dialogue about legacy, visibility and cultural memory. While some histories are more readily traceable within institutional archives than others, the symposium is intentionally shaped to hold both what is recorded and what has been carried through practice, oral history and community-led work.

Through panel discussion, musical contributions and audience conversation, the symposium invites reflection on how Global Majority musical traditions have shaped music education, performance and cultural life in Leeds — and how Leeds Conservatoire, as a cultural institution can more responsibly recognise, support and carry these histories forward.

The event centres community-led perspectives and lived experience, and looks not only to the past, but to future practice rooted in equity, care and collaboration.
