The Frank Kidson Choir Project

To help us celebrate 60 years of groundbreaking music in the city, we draw inspiration from one of England’s earliest and most influential folk song collectors, Leeds-born Frank Kidson (1855–1926). Throughout his lifetime he preserved and published countless folk songs from Yorkshire (and further afield) that might otherwise have been lost. Folk musician and lecturer Bryony Griffith brings choirs together from across the region to perform stunning new harmony arrangements of local songs from his pivotal 1891 publication ‘Traditional Tunes’.

Choir performances include the Leeds City Museum Community Choir, Sally’s Army, Shepley Singers and staff and students from the Conservatoire.

Leeds City Museum Community Choir

Emma Sargison leads the Leeds City Museum Community Choir, which is friendly, fun and open to all with a chance to connect with people. Emma’s background is in Jazz and Folk, and she has valuable experience with Community Singing. Emma writes arrangements and has researched choir methods at MA Level. She uses her Kodaly training along with well-being techniques to develop harmony, promote health and encourage joyful events.

Shepley Singers

Shepley Singers are a group of amateur singers who come together under the direction of Yorkshire folk musician Bryony Griffith to perform 4-part a cappella arrangements of traditional folk songs. Formed in 2007 to perform at the first Shepley Spring Festival, the group decided to keep going and now have a Spring repertoire and a Winter repertoire of traditional folk songs arranged by Bryony which they perform at local fundraisers and events.

Sally’s Army

Sally’s Army was founded in 2011, when Musical Director Sally Egan brought a small group of friends together to sing.  The choir now has more than 70 members and has sung concerts all over Yorkshire and on tour to Italy and Spain.  Sally’s Army is a Community choir at heart and has performed concerts to raise money for many different causes including St Gemma’s Hospice, Heart Research, Martin House Hospice, Angels for Children Foundation - a school-building project in the Philippines, Mary’s Meals, Cancer Research, Singing for the Brain, Joanna Project and Otley Welcomes. Sally’s Army appears on Otley Brass Band’s recording On Ilkley Moor, singing On Ilkley Moor Bah ‘Tat and performs Visit Otley’s Christmas Song The Twelve Days of Otley Christmas.
