Information for Students

Back to Keeping our Community Safe

Important: If you become unwell you must immediately self-isolate in line with current guidelines and fill in our reporting your absence form.

If you begin displaying symptoms of COVID-19 infection, you must return to your student accommodation immediately and self-isolate in line with the current guidelines, including the guidelines from your accommodation provider. This may mean that the people you live with will also need to isolate.

You will need to inform us by filling in our reporting your absence form, as will the people you live with.

Procedure if a case is reported

If anyone you have had close contact with reports a positive Covid-19 test, you will be expected to self-isolate according to government guidance. We will deliver as much of your tuition online as possible, if you are well enough to participate.

Becoming unwell in our buildings

If you become unwell while you are in one of the conservatoire buildings, you should avoid contact with anyone. Put a face mask on immediately and sanitise your hands if you can. Avoid touching surfaces. If you are feeling well enough to leave the building, then you must return to your student accommodation immediately and self-isolate.

If you think that you need medical attention you should alert your tutor (if in a lesson) or call a First Aider. Contact details for First Aiders can be found on a green poster found on the wall in various locations throughout our buildings. The First Aider might accompany you to an isolation room until medical help can be provided.

You will then need to inform us by filling in our reporting your absence form, as will the people you live with.

Students at higher risk (e.g. shielding)

If you think you might be at a higher risk from COVID-19, or you care for someone who is, you can take our short self-assessment and access more guidance on keeping yourself safe here.

If you are advised by your doctor to start shielding while you are studying, you will be able to tell us through the absence reporting procedure.

Update for Students: 17 Nov 2020

Our buildings remain open during lockdown, and in-person timetabled classes are going ahead. You are expected to attend in-person classes unless you are self-isolating, in which case you should report to us here.

You are also expected to remain in your term-time accommodation in Leeds until at least 2 December. We are working on the arrangements for travelling out of Leeds for the Christmas vacation.

We understand that some of you are reluctant to attend in person. Our campus is COVID secure, and we have reviewed our risk assessment in the light of the new restrictions. We have also extended our face covering requirements during the lockdown to make sure that it is safe to study. The numbers of students testing positive for COVID-19 is falling, at the conservatoire and across Leeds.

If you still don’t want to attend in person, we will not penalise you for non-attendance.

If you are an overseas student with a Tier 4 visa, we still need to monitor your attendance for compliance with UK Visas and Immigration, but we will use information about your Space activity in addition to attendance information to make sure that you are engaging with your learning.

You need to understand what it will mean for your studies if you don’t attend:

  • You need to be able to access online teaching and learning, and the equipment/facilities that you need to complete your classes.
  • Your experience may not be the same as on-campus teaching and learning. We cannot guarantee that all of your classes can be made available online.
  • If you are taking part in group work, your non-attendance will affect others in your group. We cannot guarantee to be able to move you to a different group.
  • We cannot change your timetable or replace in-person classes that you miss through non-attendance.
  • You still need to be prepared for any scheduled assessments. If there are other circumstances that mean you cannot take part in assessments, our normal mitigating circumstances procedure will apply.
  • Tuition fees will be the same, whether or not you attend on-campus classes.
  • If you cannot collect Library loans we may be able to post them to you. You will be able to order up to five items for posting per fortnight. There’s more information about how to arrange this on Space.

If you choose to leave student accommodation:

  • You may still be liable for payment of rent, depending on your contract with your accommodation provider. I am sorry but we will not be able to intervene in this or provide rent refunds.
  • You need to continue to follow all government guidance about travel to and from the conservatoire.
