Study BA (Hons) Music (Electronic Music Production) at Leeds Conservatoire

Develop your creativity by writing original music that focuses on contemporary electronic music including genres such as EDM, Hip Hop, Techno, DnB and Grime, whilst acquiring skills in dedicated music production suites.

This course centres on electronic music production, composition, and DJ performance technologies. You will have access to high end equipment and resources including a dedicated DJ suite and Mac labs, and are taught by experts in their field, in a friendly setting, with other like-minded people along with students studying on BA Music Production.

Course Overview

World-class facilities

You’ll have access to six Apple Mac Labs, equipped with over 100 high-specification iMacs, a bespoke DJ Suite with cutting-edge equipment, as well as numerous composition, rehearsal and performance spaces.

All of these facilities are open until late during term-time, giving you a dedicated, flexible environment in which to develop your DJ and production skills, as well as becoming well-versed in Apple Logic and Avid Pro Tools software.

Each year, a number of industry professionals deliver masterclasses to our students. Recent sessions have been given by Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer Mandy Parnell (Björk, Brian Eno, The XX) and producers Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream, Manic Street Preachers, Kasabian) and Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, David Guetta).

DJ Performance

Unique to a UK conservatoire, you’ll explore industry-standard DJ software and hardware technology, enabling you to create your own sets. Our links with industry, festivals and venues mean that you’ll have numerous opportunities to get out there and perform.

Career destinations

Foundation Year

If you choose to study the 4-year Electronic Music Production with Foundation Year programme, your first year will focus on developing you through specialist one to-one tuition, and strengthening your music theory and academic skills, as well as your creativity and artistry.

You will also have access to a weekly programme of workshops and masterclasses, as well as regular individual tutorials with academic staff. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will automatically progress to year one of the 2026-entry curriculum, and will work towards an award of BA (Hons) Electronic Music Production with Foundation Year.

Important note: There is no option to progress from Foundation Year onto Year 1 of a combined honours course, as these courses will not be running in 2026.

Years 1, 2 and 3

For students starting a course with Foundation Year in 2025, Years 1, 2 and 3 will follow the curriculum of the 2026-entry BA (Hons) Electronic Music Production course.

Please note: There is no option to progress from Foundation Year onto Year 1 of a combined honours course, as these courses will not be running in 2026.

DAW & DJ Fundamentals 

You’ll explore industry-standard software and hardware used in electronic music production and live performance. This module helps you develop essential DAW and DJ skills, preparing you for work in creative industries. You’ll apply these skills across composition and performance contexts, laying a foundation for advanced production. 

DAW & DJ Techniques 

You’ll build on your foundational DAW and DJ experience to refine your technical skillset. This module enhances your production workflow and introduces techniques for more complex DJ and DAW integration. It prepares you for advanced work in arrangement and live performance through hands-on, creative tasks. 

Electronic Music Arrangement 

You’ll explore techniques used to structure and develop electronic music tracks across genres. This module helps you evaluate a wide range of arrangement approaches and apply them to your own productions. By experimenting with form, variation, and flow, you’ll strengthen your ability to shape dynamic musical experiences. 

Electronic Music Composition 

You’ll dive into the creative process behind a wide range of electronic music genres—from grime and techno to house, trap, and EDM. Through DAW-based production, you’ll develop genre-specific techniques and start to define your own sonic identity. This module encourages you to contextualise your work within real-world practices. 

Music Production in Context 

You’ll study the evolving role of the music producer through research into influential figures and seminal recordings. This module helps you understand how producers shape sound, genre, and industry trends. You’ll analyse work across styles and time periods to gain insight into your own creative and professional development. 

Production Analysis 

You’ll develop a deeper understanding of what makes a successful music production by deconstructing tracks across genres. Using analytical frameworks, you’ll explore how different elements—structure, sound design, mix—come together in a final product. This module sharpens your listening and production awareness for use in your own work. 

DAW & DJ Production 

You’ll refine your DAW and DJ abilities to create high-quality assets for live performance and professional production. This module deepens your command of software, hardware, and workflow while encouraging creative experimentation. You’ll develop polished material for live sets and strengthen your technical and artistic identity. 

Electronic Music Production Project 

You’ll showcase your evolving production voice through a focused, high-quality project. Building on your sampling, synthesis, and mixing knowledge, you’ll plan and deliver a genre-specific production that highlights your individuality. This module lays the foundation for your Level 6 project and helps refine your creative direction. 

Live Set Production 

You’ll bring your production skills into the performance space by developing and refining a professional live set. This module combines technical rigour with creative flair, guiding you through real-world applications of DAW and DJ performance. You’ll build the confidence and ability to deliver live music in a professional context. 

Collaborative Project 

You’ll work with artists from across the creative industries—like filmmakers, designers, or musicians—to plan and deliver a professional production project. This module develops your collaboration, leadership, and production skills while simulating real-world creative scenarios and workflows. You’ll bring your technical knowledge into dynamic, cross-disciplinary practice. 

Individual Project 

You’ll design and deliver a major production project aligned with your artistic and professional goals. Working independently, you’ll apply the full range of your skills to produce high-quality work in your chosen genre or specialism. This module supports self-direction, industry readiness, and career planning. 

Live Production Environments 

You’ll explore the practical and technical aspects of live sound, from setting up systems to operating equipment at events. This module promotes teamwork and real-time decision-making, helping you understand roles and workflows in live production. You’ll gain confidence working in high-pressure, collaborative environments. 

Sonic Arts & Sound Design 

You’ll explore sound as a creative and cultural medium, engaging with experimental techniques and artistic production. This module encourages exploration through critical listening, unconventional tools, and advanced sound design. You’ll broaden your practice and push the boundaries of how sound can be used and understood. 

Vocal Production for Producers 

You’ll develop advanced vocal production skills, including psychological insight into performer-producer collaboration. This module explores vocal recording, processing, and editing in depth, helping you bring out the best in vocalists and refine your approach to one of the most crucial elements of modern production.

Module specifications are for applicants choosing to start their course in the 2021/22 academic year. In compliance with University of Hull regulations, the conservatoire retains the right to make minor amendments and improvements to course, programme and module content year on year. This may result in minor changes to these specifications by September 2022.

If you are at Grade 6 standard or higher in an instrument or voice, you can also choose to have additional 1:1 tuition in this area outside of your standard timetabled teaching.

This is not part of your course, but there are a limited number of Instrumental, Vocal & Composition Bursaries available, or tuition can be arranged at additional cost.

BA (Hons) - 3 Years

96 UCAS tariff points from level 3 studies or equivalent, which normally include A Level Music or a BTEC Extended Diploma in a Music-related subject.

A minimum of three GCSEs including English Language at Grade C / Grade 4 or above or equivalent international qualification, eg IELTS 6.0 (5.5 in each component).

BA (Hons) with Foundation Year - 4 Years

64 UCAS tariff points from level 3 studies or equivalent, which normally include A Level Music or a BTEC Extended Diploma in a Music-related subject.

A minimum of three GCSEs including English Language at Grade C / Grade 4 or above or equivalent international qualification, eg IELTS 6.0 (5.5 in each component).

BA (Hons) - Top-Up

Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent in a relevant subject.

A minimum of three GCSEs including English Language at Grade C / Grade 4 or above or equivalent international qualification, eg IELTS 6.0 (5.5 in each component).

Eden Prince

Course Studied: BA Music Production

With over 100 million streams on Spotify and a Platinum record to boot, Eden burst onto the scene with a series of inspired reworkings of hits by various artists including fellow Leeds Conservatoire graduate John Newman.

Maintaining a fairly mysterious public persona, Prince began leaking his smooth, club-ready covers of songs by Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, among others, around 2015.

Since then, Eden has been invited by Jonas Blue to play at Cream Ibiza.
